A recent study by OpenAI's Economic Research has shed light on how AI is redefining the boundaries of work. By analyzing over 800,000 messages from U.S. ChatGPT users, the researchers found that AI is not only augmenting tasks within specific occupations but also enabling workers to take on tasks traditionally associated with other roles.
Key Insights
The study highlights several key points: nearly half of occupation-specific AI use crosses job boundaries, with 43.5% of occupation-specific messages being about tasks associated with another occupation. Furthermore, small businesses exhibit a higher degree of task crossover, with outside-occupation tasks accounting for 18.9% of messages from users in workspaces with 2-5 seats. These findings suggest that AI is facilitating a more flexible and interdisciplinary approach to work, potentially leading to increased productivity and innovation.
