Anthropic Halts Access to Fable 5 & Mythos 5 Following Government Directive
Anthropic has suddenly pulled the plug on public and even internal access to its cutting-edge AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, following a direct order from the U.S. government. The directive cites unspecified national security concerns, impacting all customers and foreign nationals, regardless of their location or employment status with Anthropic.
While Anthropic’s popular Claude chatbot and other models remain operational, the suspension targets its two newest, powerful AIs. Fable 5, launched just days ago, was designed to bring many capabilities of the elite Mythos 5 – a cybersecurity model exclusively for Project Glasswing partners – to a broader audience. Fable 5 impressed during internal tests, notably outperforming previous models by beating Pokémon FireRed, a feat Claude couldn't achieve with its predecessor.
The company suspects the government's concern stems from intelligence about a potential "jailbreak" method for Fable 5. Anthropic has previously emphasized its robust safeguards, even admitting some users found them "overly broad" in their efforts to prevent misuse. Despite their commitment to security and belief in government oversight for unsafe deployments, Anthropic publicly disagrees with this particular action, advocating for a more transparent, fair, and technically grounded process for such interventions.
